They discontinued the weekday lunch Indian buffet. No idea why. It was a favorite lunch stop for me and I always enjoyed the buffet. Guess I am going down the road now.

Every so often on a holiday (when they feel like) House of India offers a great dinner buffet . Well worth the yummm factor, best way to taste a dab of this and that. We've been going there for years, more often then not it's consistently good, friendly, hassle-free.

This place is horrible, from the service to the food. Our waiter was young, inexperienced, disorganized and slow. We started with their version of a chili tempura which was not bad. However, the cilantro/mint sauce was obviously old and discolored. We had the shish kabob which one would assume is whole chunks of lamb, not the ground lamb that came out. It tasted of organ meats and had a putrid smell, we sent it back. The waiter did not appologize or ask us if we wanted a replacement, I guess he was used to having food sent back. The table near us told the waiter that she was allergic to onions. Their food came out covered in onions and when they sent it back, it still had onions on the bottom and they sent it back again. We also had their butter chicken which cost $13 and came in a very small bowl with mostly sauce that tasted like canned tomato sauce with butter. There were mysterious black particles throughout the sauce? Even the rice was a very small amount! The garlic naan had freeze dried garlic chips instead of fresh garlic. Avoid this place at all costs!

Ok, so a quick update on House of India. This place has gone so far down hill it's not even worth going to anymore. 6 of us went last night and the food was atrocious and service horrible. I feel bad about lumping all of the service into the "horrible" catagory simply because there was one girl there who was very sweet and was constantly over filling our waters. The wait for our food was roughly 45 minutes and we were the only ones there for half that time. Once it arrived you could feel the disappointment around the table. Chicken tikka masala, bland, chicken korma, bland, lamb korma, bland, chili chicken, was NOT chili chicken. The chutneys tasted watered down and the naan tasted packaged. I looked around and saw all the other diners looking like they were enjoying their food, novices I thought. There were no Indian folks in the entire place except the staff and my father in law, which I found to be pretty telling. After last night I've decided, like the rest of us, that House of India has slumped too far down to ever want to return there. For us at this point Priya is the only local place we'll be going for Indian fare.

It's been a while since I was last here, two years perhaps, and it seems that time has not been good to House of India. The Restaurant looks nice and it's comfortable, but the food was only so so. I got Lamb Korma and found it to be bland and thick - too thick. Vegetable Samosas were alright, but the ungenerous amount of chutney (which I paid for) was a disappointment. The naan was average. On the bright side the prices weren't too bad, but honestly I'd rather pay a little more for food I'd enjoy. I wanted to give this one a higher score as I'd had good dinners in the past, but it is what it is.

In a word, disgusting. We went for a lunch buffet, which admittedly is already points off in my book because buffets are gross to me. But, a friend was taking us out and suggested the place, so off we went! We walked in on Sunday at around noon, right after they had opened. Sat down, the waitress refused to smile at us or even ask us if we wanted something off the menu. As soon as we got food, we realized everything was cold. If they had just opened, why wasn't the food warm? On top of that, one member of the party asked our (reluctant) waitress if she could turn the burner up on something, and the waitress TOUCHED the food with her bare hand and claimed it was warm enough. On top of that, there was very little selection in terms of food in the buffet, and the majority of the dishes contained meat, which is incredibly odd for an Indian restaurant. The 4-5 bites I did eat were sort of bland and nothing like good Indian food should taste. Yuck, yuckity yuck-ola. Never going back there.

Awful service, food even worse. Would not go back under any circumstances.

Our party of 12 left the the House of India last night after 40 minutes without having been served. Not even drinks. As a matter of fact, our waiter didn't even come to greet us and take our drink order until someone in our party ran him down a good 15 minutes after we arrived. What's more, not only hadn't we gotten our drinks 25 minutes later when we left, our dinner order was never taken. As we were leaving, a woman who appeared to be the manager appeared out of the kitchen and shouted after us, "but your drinks are ready!". I won't be going back.

AWEFUL EXPERIENCE! Rarely do I write critical reviews, but this experience really tipped me off. So 6 of my friends went here on a Friday night for dinner; to start with it was hardly a busy night for them with Round 6 guests. Expectations of a fast service: big let down. Waited for half hr for a soup and appetisers. The hot and sour soup which Harold any restraint can miss had so much Tabasco sauce, it was agreed by the entire group that it was unpalatable and we returned the soups. The main course took its own sweet time to come; the portions were very small, we decided to repeat a couple of orders. The lamb biriyNi was very average with undercooked lamb pieces. The butter chicken, kofta, veg biriyNi were not bad but nothing special. We decided to leave and it was another shocker. The bill: So we asked them to divide by six. They messed up and split by 2, charged 2 out of the six cards. Brought the receipts: completely wrong ones. There were receipts of some random transaction, neither of our cards. They had included gratuity, understandable. But for such unprofessional service, totally unacceptable. We were so fed up we left without bothering to sort the crappy situation. Could so many things go wrong on the same day? The people here need to buck up. To sympathise, may just be their off day. On a Friday night with hardly any customers? I WILLNEVER RETURN HERE. there are so many good Indian restaurants in metro Detroit. Look elsewhere to satiate your Indian food cravings.

Not bad for the lunch buffet. Nothing really exceptional. I didn't think it as bad as the other reviewers. Just sort of ordinary Indian food. If White Castle were Indian, this would be it.

This was the worst experience I ever had in any restaurant. Me and my wife went for dinner tonight and can't wait to share this terrible story. At first we had to wait for a long time at the table before the lady took an effort to ask us for water and order. The heat was so low that I was freezing inside the restaurant. When the entree came to our table it looked over priced from its portion of serving. The taste of chicken was similar to what I use to cook when I was a student. After we finished our dinner, the lady was very busy talking on phone and we had to wait till her phone got over. When she came with the bill, I asked her to give us an discount for the restaurant dot com coupon I had and I was surprised when she said we do not accept it. When I asked her the reason, she replied one of a server contacted herself to restaurant dot com and have listed their restaurant on the website without asking the owner. Who will believe this non-sense , we both were extremely shocked and decided to just pay the bill and get out from there. As we got our CC back I was kind enough to leave some tip and started walking out. But the worst hospitality was yet to come, the lady turned off the lights before we had opened the door to walk out. I will never go to this place again.

This is my 1st experience with Indian cuisine! House of India has friendly & quick service, but it might be due to the fact that I am the only one in the restaurant at 3:30pm. The food was good, but a bit pricey for a lunch.

Went there for lunch today becuase Bombay Grille accross the street still had their doors still locked at 11:35 am (see my review for them). Lunch buffet was $9.50, selection was not good, no butter chicken, only white rice. They had 3 chicken dishes but they all had bones. One was wings. Food was not spicy at all, good for those who want indian without spice. I can see why they only have limited selection because there was only 3 other tables of people eating there. i saw 3 people walk in, check out the food then walk out. Too bad because i hate to see anybody fail. Hopefully they will read these reviews and fix things.

Garlic naan was quite good but the palak paneer had gritty paneer and a weird flavor. Asked for medium spicy and it had no spice. The vegetable samosas weren't crispy and the filling was also very bland. The bill was also incredibly expensive compared to other places in the area that deliver a superior product.

My beau and I are like curry-craving kids in a candy store when we find ourselves in Oakland county. The car swerves as our heads whirl around like Linda Blair, taking in the amazing plethora of Indian joints. Driving home from a day of quirky play at Marvin's Marvelous Mechanical Museum, we spotted House of India and decided to give it a try. We walked in and were met with a spacious, pleasant interior space and a smiling server waiting to seat us. Nice music, cloth napkins, draped fabrics...aah. The menu boasts a fascinating array which I must list: Appetizers, soups & salads, side dishes, grilled delicacies, veggie, chicken, lamb, and seafood dinners, paneer (yes-a whole menu section!), biryani, fresh breads, house specials, Indo-Chinese (!!), desserts, and drinks. I assumed we'd be spending a bit more here after scoping out the decor, menu, and wine list, but not so at all. A 12-piece veggie pakora appetizer is $3.00, our dinners were $11.00. The pakoras were plentiful and delicious with lots of fresh coriander, the samosas had lots of meaty filling for my cohort. The kofta balls are very unusual here-simpler but still substantial...you can clearly see the chunks of veggies and cheese inside. Portions are large, and though we ordered mild spice, this didn't mean a complete absence of them. My only wish is that those flavors were punchier...but we did order mild-next time I'll get medium and see. We finished with the homemade pistachio ice cream, loaded with tasty pistachio chunks. Throughout our visit our server continued her pleasant "reserved but attentive" ways and everything ordered came very quickly. We'll surely be back to sample more of their interesting choices as the bells and lights of Marvin's slowly fade from our heads.

Bad. The food, service, everything is awful. From the old lukewarm items on the buffet, to service that is slow, incompetent and rude -that boy running the front of the house is a nuisance- this place simply is the worst restaurant in the area. It is not hard to guess why it is always empty.

Been supporting them for years. My whole family and I are fans of their tandoori chicken cooked mild+. I can seriously eat the whole full order alone. I've had their chicken Makani and Aloo Gobi....and sorry not a fan of that. BUT their tandoori is YUM. If it wasn't for Lent id probably be ordering some right now! Lol! Try it. As for Bombay Grill.....go read my review. House of India doesn't use frozen veggies or have a non indian cook like Bombay Grill. I know for 100% fact that the "chef" is Mexican. I have nothing against Mexicans.....but its a Indian restaurant....that's just wrong on so many levels. The foods are soooo different! And Nothing is made to order. I'm all about quality. Not quanity. If the food is crap.....what's the point? And hello people! I don't want to pay for food that is not made to parr. I'm on a mission ppl so far the only decent indian restaurant I discovered was in Vegas......will we Michiganders ever be so lucky to have one here? Who knows, but until then my fellow yelpies and I are still on a mission. Xoxo

I have been going to this place for years, and just went back after a long time. We first went to Udipi, but we left due to everything on the menu being either deep fried and/or extremely carb heavy, not to mention the bugs, lack of air conditioning, and general layer of filth on every table. House of India was literally a breath of fresh air. The vegetarian is delicious, but we went for the chicken. The vindaloo, tikka masala, and madras were all lovely. The naan was also delicious. I've never seen this place busier than a few tables, so if you're looking for an easy, quiet, and relatively quick Indian meal, this is the place to go. It's not fabulous or anything, but it's consistently good.

It is surprising that restaurants with the same name can be so different. But as much h as I have enjoyed the Bloomfield Hills location, this one was at the polar opposite end of the spectrum. The lunch buffet I tried today was revolting. Curries were comprised of pots of bones served in a curry gravy. The Tandoori Chicken seemed potted or braised and it was swimming in a bright red food coloring laced sauce. The vegetable dishes were tasteless and sloppily thrown together. There was no Nan or Paratha bread served at all. The food was what I would imagine must be like as served in an Indian army chow line. Yuck!

Get the samosas, whatever spice mix they use it was the best I've had acrosse several Indian restaurants. Gave me a wonderful warm feeling inside as I ate. Rest of our meal was good, Lamb Rogan Josh was delicious as I tried something different than the usual Tikka Masala

Me and my husband went here on a weekday at noon and we were the only table there. The waitress was a younger girl and when i asked if they had idli she made a face and asked whats that? I never heard about it. Please give me a break if you are Indian you will know. Just reply that you dont have it and dont act sooo stupid and rude. The service was horrible, she acted as if she didnt want to be there. We had indo Chinese soup that was good and chili chicken wasnt good. Based on service and attitude of waitress, we wont be back.

Ordered take out, and it seemed to be leftovers from the lunch buffet. We ordered a full Tandoori chicken and got 2 dried out thighs and 5 dried out legs. Everything else seemed tired and leftover. We won't go back even though we have eaten there for years. I am unhappy that I paid full price for leftovers.

I don't know why House of India has such a low rating. I am sad, as I went to this place almost once and week for two years and I can easily give it five stars for each time. There are a lot of Indian places to choose from in SE Michigan, but House of India has a special spot in my heart. It was near my home and I could count on it for my samosa chat and seekh kabab!!! Ask them to make the seekh kabab extra spicy and you will just die of happiness. The food is always fresh, 100% authentic and never a disappointment. My mouth is watering now as I think about all the food. Sad that I am no longer near the area. I recommend that you give it a try as I know Indian food and this place will never disappoint!

Buffett was OLD FOOD and not good at all. Wouldn't refill with fresh food. Hostess was clueless. You could hear cook screaming in the back. Dirty bathrooms. WORSE THAN HORRIBLE.

There are quite a few options for Indian food in the Farmington Hills area. By far, the best of these is House of India. Despite the slight setback of a change in the normal cook and wait staff, the food here stays a cut above the other restaurants. My normal order consists of chicken tikka masala, kashmiri naan, mango achar & masala tea. My mouth waters every time I think about eating this delectable treat. My only complaints is that since the cut over, the service isn't as good as it once was. Still, do yourself a favor and check them out!

  • Rob S.

Pros: clean restaurant, kept water glasses well filled, food was acceptable except for the lack of chicken in the curry chicken dish. Cons: unfriendly but attentive service, was given the feeling as though we were a bother to the wait staff when asking for additional items, forgot to bring the soup and it still showed up on the bill, tried skimping on rice by only bringing two sides of rice with 3 entrees, nickel and dime the customer for everything including table bread. Summary: will not return to House of India....instead I will go back to India Spice in Farmington Hills for a much more authentic atmosphere and FRIENDLIER dining experience.

Standard Indian restaurant. I can happily do office-lunch here when I'm feeling like Indian, but its nothing great.

I took my wife and 11 month old daughter here and the experience was great. One big plus was that they were open during the afternoon, a rarity for an Indian restaurant. We started the meal with the Samosa Chat with mild spice. The flavors were perfectly blended and the presentation was nice. My wife, who had only had 1 bad experience with Indian food before, liked it. My daughter liked the saucy chickpeas. Dinner consisted of Chicken Korma and Chicken Makhni. Both we very good and reasonable portions. We had regular naan and a sweet naan with rose petals and nuts. The sweet naan was the best naan I've ever had and my wife absolutely loved it. We finished the meal with an order of gulab jamun, which was brought out piping hot and exactly how I remembered it. The only downside to the meal was the relatively small amount of rice that was presented with 2 entrees. However, we are willing to overlook that and come back again sometime.

I'm not a big enough Indian Food Buff to remember what I had but I can say what I had was alright. They give rice with their curries, not naan. Disappointing. I don't think anyone going here with just a regular hankering for Indian food and not a super high expectation will be disappointed. With that said, the second time I came here, the table next to us were NOT satisfied at all. I think something was undercooked or something. Prices are okay. Service is okay. Cleanliness is okay. Bathroom is okay. Parking is okay. Everything is okay. Occasionally you will be okay. Occasionally you will not. Also, never more than 2-3 tables occupied when I've been there. Leaves me questioning the place a bit. Therefore what started as a 3* review is being downgraded to 2*.

Great food! The owner is usually there and very friendly. Food is consistent, reasonable and very good portions. Dont follow the negative reviews and give them a chance! You will not be disappointed

I don't know why this place has such low ratings. It's authentic Indian food and the prices are what you would expect. The portion sizes are spot on and if you ask for medium, mild, or spicy- you get exactly that. There is a definite Indian vibe going on which gives it a nice ambiance, and it was clean. I don't do buffets- I recommend ordering off the menu, which has everything. There are plenty of vegan and vegetarian choices. The server was beautiful and very attentive to our needs (with a party of 7). Overall I love the way they prepare the food and everything tastes awesome which is the most important thing. We will definitely be going back!

My review is only based on samosas and naan. We got a carry out of those to go along with the food we made. The samosas were the worst I've had. The naan was naan...it's just bread, pretty hard to screw it up. I will not head back to this restaurant with all the Indian restaurants in the area.
